Art 448 Introduction to Digital Photography for Non-Art Majors University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Art

Assignment #3
Nature / Culture: Intersections of the Landscape and Human Culture
Details:
Photograph scenes that show the intersections and interventions of human culture with the natural world.
3 shots in a row

The first piece is a picture of the north branch of the Chicago River. If you look at the stones placed as a barrier to the river, you will notice two tree stumps breaking through the stones. I believe this shows that nature cannot be contained by man.

The second piece shows a man-made path through a local park. This shows human culture going through and around nature working in harmony with it. The path has many leaves resting on it - but this is not harming the path and the path is not harming nature.

This pictures were taken with my Nikon D3000 camera. There was slight editing done using photoshop to brighten the photograph.

The lawnmower was shot in in front of ancient Mayan ruins in the southern Mexican city of Tulum.  Its stark contrast represents 2 eras of mankind's influence on the natural landscape.

The Chicago skyline was shot from the 96th floor of the Hancock Tower during sunset.  The shot was taken using shutter priority with no flash, and captures mankind's influence on the natural landscape in the largest sense.

The photos were shot using a Nikon d3100 DSLR.

Nature (Wood)

A side of a stone bench with nails hammered into the wooden planks by humans. Overtime, elements of nature from rust of the nails to moss on the planks to lichens on the stone appear.

I began trying to interpret the distinction between nature and culture within my own worldview - trying to understand the connection between the things I found beautiful in nature and the things I found beautiful in culture. Jewelry has always appealed to me as a cultural way of adorning the natural, though it is generally found adorning the natural body. Instead, I focused on using jewelry as an adornment to nature's beauty, and shot a series with various pieces from my own personal jewelry collection in the natural landscape around me. I hope you enjoy.

Photos were shot with a fixed lens megazoom Panasonic DMC FZ35. No enhancements were made aside from slight color enrichment when necessary.
